The premature death of influential musicians from the seventies led to the spread of the “Club 27” phenomenon. Among those who died at the age of 27 were Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin. A team of scientists from Indiana University analyzed data from 344,000 famous people to uncover the truth about Club 27.

Researchers found that although musicians tend to die earlier than other famous people, there is no evidence to support the theory that age 27 increases the risk of death, the Daily Mail writes. Some believe that the reason for their deaths was that these people may have had a difficult childhood, growing up isolated and filled with self-doubt.
Others suggest that the pressure of approaching adulthood and turning 30 may have triggered celebrities’ desire to escape reality through increasingly heavy use of illicit substances.

But experts have debunked this myth, saying human stars are no more likely to die at age 27 than at other ages. But they found that the legacies of celebrities who died at this age tended to receive more attention than the legacies of those who died at other ages.
Thus, 944 people in the dataset who died at the age of 27 received relatively more visits to their pages. Scientists said the “Club 27” effect may occur due to the dominant influence of the legend on the Internet. For example, even people who have not heard of this phenomenon are more likely to encounter mention of a famous person dying at this age than at other ages.
“The legend of the 27’s Club was born from a statistically improbable event that occurred around 1970; Within two years, four superstar musicians had died, all at the age of 27. This coincidence captured the public imagination so much that our fascination with Club 27 came to life,” researchers said.
The four musicians involved in the “statistically unlikely” incident included Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin, who died aged 27 between 1969 and 1971.
