The emergence of trends is influenced not only by the catwalk collections of designers, the images of influencers on social networks and unusual tricks of street style heroes, but also by the film industry. Heroes of films and TV series often receive the title of style icons and radically change the situation in the fashion market. For example, the demand for Manolo Blahnik shoes increased significantly due to “Sex and the City,” and after the release of “Twin Peaks,” men began combing their hair back and wearing trench coats like Dale Cooper’s. And there are many such examples. Remember the wild explosion of gothic aesthetics on Wednesday, when every second person was searching for the same pointed-collared black dresses in stores.
However, we should not think that only Western films determine trends. Russian cinema also influences the style of generations. By the way, not so long ago we even made a material in which we talked about the trends predicted in Soviet films and showed the most stylish characters of that period.
And today we decided to analyze the images of our favorite heroes from modern Russian cinema (since the late 1990s). We have collected seven of the brightest and most memorable.
Danila Bagrov from the movie “Brother” (1997)

The director of the films “Brother” and “Brother-2” did not plan to make Danila Bagrov a style icon, and almost all the items of the iconic character were found in flea markets. Even the same beige thick knitted sweater (which almost everyone dreamed of after the release of the film) was bought by costume designer Nadezhda Vasilyeva for 35 rubles. “When I saw this thing, I immediately thought that it would suit Lesha (we are talking about director Alexei Balabanov – Note ed.). My grandmother always knitted him warm and comfortable sweaters with knitted needles and large knits. And he wore them all the time. God forbid I should have bought him a sweater at the store, or even offered to buy him a sweater. “And since I always saw Lesha in Bagrovo as a person who can protect and defend himself and his loved ones, I immediately realized that you cannot imagine better clothes for him,” he said.
In the second film, the image of the screen hero Sergei Bodrov practically did not change – he still wore the same sweater, black ankle boots, dark trousers, gray trench coat and woolen coat. However, everything so harmoniously reflected the complex character of the character that it was impossible to imagine him in anything else.
Sasha Bely from the movie “Brigade” (2002)

Sasha Bely from “Brigade” is a completely different story. His wardrobe doesn’t have cozy sweaters and shabby coats, but there are excellent trouser suits, leather coats, trench coats and black turtlenecks. The on-screen thug combs his hair back, smokes a lot (we remind you that this is harmful to your health) and wears leather gloves. So after the release of the series (and still) the demand for products referring to the 90s does not decrease.
Alice from “Night Watch” (2004)

Timur Bekmambetov’s “Night Watch” is the first Russian blockbuster shot according to all Hollywood rules. There’s product placement, exciting action and some very sexy girls. The role of the latter went to Zhanna Friske, who played the witch Alice (by the way, this was her first major film work) and immediately became a style icon and sex symbol. We think everyone remembers the iconic scene where Friske races towards the Cosmos Hotel. Their images also deserve special attention. Alice appears in the shot either in a dark red suit with a studded collar or a dramatic dress with an extreme neckline. It’s no wonder that even now Russian it-girls cite his photos.
Simon from “Dead Man’s Bluff” (2005)

“Zhmurki” is another film by Alexei Balabanov that has become a cult classic. The black comedy, featuring Dmitry Dyuzhev, Andrei Panin and Nikita Mikhalkov, became the director’s first work after the very difficult death of his close friend Sergei Bodrov. The film, which was ultimately released in 2005, gave audiences a break from the glamor of the 2000s. The heroes of Zhmurok wear dark red jackets, baggy T-shirts, rough leather jackets and heavy chains. But the role of style icon went to Simon, aka Dmitry Dyuzhev, who wore a black trench coat with exaggerated shoulders, a leather vest and a striped shirt with an accent collar throughout the film. His image is still considered one of the most recognizable in Russian cinema.
Lena from “He Kept Women” (2019)

Konstantin Bogomolov’s series “He Kept Women” is one of the most striking domestic projects of recent years. And it’s not only the unexpected twists of the plot and very frank sex scenes that attract attention, but also the visuals that very accurately describe the personalities of the characters and their evolution. This is especially noticeable in the heroine Daria Moroz, a Moscow investigator who turns into a social diva in several episodes. Old Money wears pantsuits, swinging dresses, nude jackets and crazy pointy stilettos.
Lera from “Happy Ending” (2021)

It is worth noting that in recent years the serial industry has been pleased with valuable new products. For example, in the spring of 2021, the Happy End project starring Lena Tronina, Denis Vlasenko and Alexander Gorchilin was released. The series instantly became the talk of the capital and beyond. Firstly, an unusual plot – a guy and a girl are trying themselves in the webcam industry, secondly, familiar to Muscovites locations, and thirdly, very cool images of the main character. After the series aired, most of the fashionistas in the city started searching for the leopard fur coat that Lera wore for almost the entire first season. The rest of the images are also pleasant – the on-screen heroine of Lena Tronina wears either a simple gray sweatshirt with a T-shirt, or evening dresses with a deep neckline.
Anna from “Living Life” (2023)

“Living Life” is another Russian series marked “18+”. The sincere dramatic thriller starring Lyubov Aksenova and Roman Vasiliev is a must-watch for two reasons. The first is to fall in love with Vasiliev’s character, the second is to pay attention to the images of the heroine Aksenova. She appears on the screens with romantic dresses with very deep necklines, low-cut tops, transparent shirts and tight skirts. Anya’s outfits are also complemented by her famous Vivienne Westwood necklaces, which are definitely worth adding to your cart.
