What if we had found the cure for postpartum depression? This is what a new study suggests, a clinical trial developed in China, the results of which were published on Thursday 11 April on British medical journal.
Esketamine, an anesthetic with antidepressant effects
Esketamine, a drug used as an anesthetic given by injection, could help fight postpartum depression. Since this medicine contains antidepressant properties and some health authorities have already approved it as an antidepressant, the magazine reports Parents.
Therefore, according to the conclusions of this investigation, “in mothers with prenatal depression, a single low dose of esketamine, administered immediately after birth, it reduced major depressive episodes by approximately three-quarters (within) 42 days after birth. »
To do this, the researchers conducted their research on several hundred mothers who had depressive symptoms during pregnancy. For half of them, they injected them into the 40 minutes after giving birth an injection of esketamine, while the other half received a placebo. Forty-two days later, less than 7% of the first group had experienced a major depressive episode, against a quarter of the second group.
If side effects have been observed, but they resolve on their own within a day. However, the study has several limitations: the women targeted had rather mild prenatal depressive symptoms, so the effects on more severe depression are unknown. Then, the study stops just over a month after giving birth, then It is impossible to know whether this drug is effective in the long term.
