The mental health of young people continues to worsen, as highlighted by the latest study by Santé Publique France. The survey conducted among 9,337 French middle and high school students reveals a profound sense of unease among them, especially among girls: they report suffering more than boys.
A third of high school girls have already had suicidal thoughts
And for good reason: 30.9%, or almost a third, have suicidal thoughts, compared to 17.4% of kids. More generally, 13% of high school students reported having already attempted suicide in their lifetime, including 3% who had to be hospitalized for this reason.
If eight out of ten adolescents, regardless of their level of education, consider themselves to be healthy and satisfied with their current life, boys have it easier than girls.
The survey also shows that middle and high school students experienced a marked deterioration in their mental health between 2018 and 2022. Deterioration much more marked among girls.
Mental health is worsening among all adolescents
More generally, 51% of middle school students and 58% of high school students regularly complain difficulty falling asleepr, while in the last twelve months only 21% of middle school students and 27% of high school students were heard. Conditions of “good level of mental well-being” which deteriorate over the years.
The rate of suicidal behavior, measured only among high school students, is particularly high: 24% of them, or a quarter, reports having had suicidal thoughts in the past twelve months.
