Changing the time: these are the effects on our body that we could do without

On the night between Saturday 30 March and Sunday 31 March, we will advance our clocks to accommodate daylight saving time. And if this obligatory step tends to disorientate us slightly, what are its effects on our organism?

And here we are: it’s almost summer. It wasn’t too early because we were starting to get impatient for the days to get longer so we could enjoy a little more sun. And if this small change will certainly be good for our morale, what effects will it have on our body and our organism?

A slightly disturbed sleep cycle

An hour doesn’t seem like a long time. But for the body, this change, however small, can be destructive. The hardest thing to regulate? The sleep ! When the nights get slightly shorter, our internal clock is disturbed. Result? Our hormonal secretions, such as melatonin, which contribute to falling asleep, become imbalanced. On average, 2 hours of soft light are necessary for melatonin to reach a level suitable for promoting sleep. That’s why the longer the days, the later we go to bed. In early summer, this imbalance results in a greater level of tiredness and sleepiness during the day.

Appetite disorders

When our internal clock is disrupted, our appetite ends up being affected. Therefore, some people will tend to stay up late at night, which will inevitably lead to more snacking. In people who like to have breakfast in the morning, a lack of appetite may appear, especially during breakfast delayed by an hour. But rest assured, just like the other symptoms, it won’t last long…

But morale is high!

The level of sunshine has incredible effects on our morale! As the days get longer, we have the opportunity to interact with light for longer periods of time. As a result, our morale is higher. In question? UVB which are synthesized by our body into vitamin D. The latter regulates mood and fights depression. A phenomenon that occurs in the early hours of the day, according to the magazine Good and right who notices : “the internal clock is sensitive to the energizing effects of light from the first two hours after waking up”. It would therefore be a shame to deprive yourself of it.
