Media: More women on screen but little time to talk

The Audiovisual and Digital Communications Regulatory Authority (Arcom) published its annual report on the representation of women in the media on Tuesday 5 March. The entity looked at the period 2016-2023 and came up with mixed results. Even though women occupy a larger part of the media landscape than a few years ago, the numbers have been stagnant for two years.

More women on set

Among the notable data, the percentage of women on set increased from 38% in 2016 to 43% in 2023. For the first time, female presenters are in the majority; they represent 51% of the workforce. The number of experts invited to speak is also increasing: 43% compared to 30% in 2016. However, it is decreasing compared to last year (4.5%). Arcom has a total of eleven television or radio channels that have achieved parity on their platforms.

As far as broadcasting is concerned, women are more represented in magazine formats and news programs, and are, on the contrary, in a clear minority in sports programs where they represent only 20% of the workforce. The experts talk less than their colleagues about international, social or culture/leisure issues, but they are more numerous on justice, education and news.

Very irregular speaking time

Despite their growing presence, women still struggle to be heard on sets, where their speaking time is significantly less than that of their colleagues. In the last year they have absorbed only 34% of the total speaking time. A figure that drops to 11% for sports broadcasts.

Again in terms of speaking time, public service channels achieve better results than private ones. Continuous information channels are those that welcome fewer women on set. Generalist channels have the highest number of women on screen and their speaking time is the highest.
