Museum of Motion Pictures employees announced their intention to form the Academy Museum Workers Association as part of the 36th American Federation of State, Territory, and Municipal Employees Council. AMWU now seeks to be recognized as the exclusive representative of the more than 200 authorized union workers working in front of and behind the house of the museum.
After decades of planning, the Academy Museum opened its physical location in the Miracle Mill district of Los Angeles last September. It formed its own association to manage staff, working conditions, salaries and benefits, as well as helping staff shape the museum’s future.
AMWU plans to hold a union election soon through the National Labor Council if the museum is not voluntarily recognized. After AMWU members receive recognition from the museum through elections or voluntarily, they will begin a contract negotiation with their employer.
