The Weather Underground explored in Crooked Media & Audacy’s “Mother Country Radicals” podcast

Crooked Media and Audacy have teamed up for a new podcast series about the radical leftist organization The Weather Underground.

The series is directed by playwright Zaid Ayers Dorn, son of Weather Underground leaders Bernard Dorn and Bill Ayers.

Set fifty years after the Pentagon subway bombing, Mother Country Radicals is a highly personal and politically charged account of a countercultural group of young activists seeking to bring about radical change by any means necessary.

It will feature Bernard Dorn and Bill Ayers in their voices and intimate interviews with Weather Underground members such as Jeff Jones and Katie Budin on one of the last tapes before his death.

The ten-part series also traces the 1970s with the likes of Fred Hampton, Angela Davis and Asta Shakur as Ayer Dorn travels to learn about his parents’ radicalization and how it shaped his family and life. On the run from the FBI with her clandestine parents, she opens up her childhood in the shadow of the underground climate by talking to Bernardine and Bill, who are still struggling with the consequences of their actions. Ultimately, she must combine the personal experiences of her beloved parents with their infamous media portrayals, narratives that have long been armed by the conversion of the media and politicians, especially during Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign.

The series was created by Crooked Media and Audacy and produced by Dustlight Productions. All ten episodes will debut on Audacy on June 9 and on other platforms, with the first three episodes debuting weekly.

“This is a story in my blood, but something I’ve never thoroughly researched before. “I wanted to understand my parents’ understanding and the things that put them at risk for their own lives and that of their children to change the world,” said Zaid Dorn. “As he told the story, the ways in which our current political systems are rooted in old conflicts became evident. The Weather Underground and their allies in the Black Freedom Movement fought the same systemic racism and police violence we see today. And this struggle contains important lessons, both cautionary and inspirational, for today’s idealistic youth.
