EXCLUSIVE: Netflix drama director Roberto Stopello has left his Mexico City-based role at the company but will continue to work on scripts with the streamer, Deadline has learned.
Stopello was VP Series in Latin America at Netflix. He has now left the country and Deadline understands he plans to return to the US for family reasons.
Before joining Netflix in 2018, Stopello spent a long time at Telemundo, where he held various writing and development roles at Spanish-language broadcaster NBCUniversal over his 15-year career.
He was one of the creators of the successful telenovela Reina Del Sur and has numerous writing credits.
Stopello put Netflix’s stamp on the novella genre by working closely with writers and creators and attempting to combine elements of classic telenovelas with drama series to create shows that resonated both locally and around the world.
Madre Solo Hay Do (also known as Daughter of another mother), Oscuro Deseo (also known as Dark desire) And “Where you Sara?” (also known as Who killed Sarah?) all left during Stopello’s time at Netflix and he worked with José Ignacio “Chascas” Valenzuela and Leonardo Padrón during his tenure as vice president.
He will continue to work with Netflix to develop projects for which he will serve as head writer or showrunner.
The streaming giant has invested heavily in original content from Latin America and from its base in Mexico City, to light films, series and novelas. In recent news, Deadline announced that it has ordered a heist thriller Bandidos.
The local originals are often some of the best non-English language shows in the world.
