What to consider: This year will be pivotal for the future of the global entertainment sector, as the resolution of a number of key talking points will shape the agenda going forward. Our team gathered to discuss the big trends and stories, and then published our feature “Ten storylines that will dominate the international market in 2024” as the clock struck twelve and the new year began. Our predictions include: continued market declines around the world, union negotiations and possible labor action outside the US, large-scale mergers and acquisitions of all kinds, debate over AI, and ongoing questions about the future of art house films.

Festival films to watch

63 of the best: This week, our annual roundup of the best American and international films set to dominate the festival was released, featuring more than 60 films. The most important of these is that of Francis Ford Coppola Megapolis Passion Project, the sequel to Todd Phillips Joker: Folie à Deux and the biopic starring Angelina Jolie Maria. Last year over 70% of our photos were posted at major festivals, while most of the other photos were delayed by the strikes or still in the mail, so our guys know what they’re talking about. BAFTA Filmmaking

David Tennant

Short and sweet: The BAFTA Film Awards longlists are here and there are hardly any surprises. Barbie, Oppenheimer And Flower Moon Killer Lead the field with 15 nods apiece and tie the record No news from the Western Front established last year. Poor stuff, master, Salt burns And We are all strangers also delivered strong performances as the Oscars continue to grow in popularity. Read the full list here. Former Doctor who Star David Tennant has been named as host of the awards ceremony, which will take place on February 18 at the Royal Festival Hall at the Southbank Center on the River Thames in London.

Darthouse Cinema: Britain survives the hazy days before New Year on a diet of leftover Christmas leftovers, chocolate coins and alcohol. A growing part of this is the PDC World Darts Championship, where a heady mix of alcohol consumption and party atmosphere attracts huge live and televised audiences at London’s Alexandra Palace. The tournament’s carnival atmosphere was heightened when 16-year-old Luke Littler became the youngest player ever to reach the final. His underdog story ensured Sky Sports’ ratings continued to soar, with the final against ‘Cool Hand’ Luke Humphries giving the pay-TV broadcaster its highest ever non-football ratings. No wonder Sky ordered an all-access documentary series arrows (working title) – think Drive to survivebut with louder walking music, beer stains and commentators shouting “ONE HUNDRED AND EEEEEEEEEIGHT!” shout!

UK closure: Our new International Content SVP Stewart Clarke broke the news that Meta will be closing its Frank Gehry-designed London base at One Rathbone Square. London is where Facebook’s parent company employs the most people outside the US, but it is the second major office it is leaving in less than six months. After laying off thousands of employees to deal with the carnage that will hit US tech media in 2023, this latest move will be important for employees. However, Meta said there would be no staff cuts as a result of the move, which comes amid an evolving hybrid working culture in the UK. Read more.
