If earlier in the trend the “naked” dress seemed very bold to many, but now it turns out: not everything that was seen before was such a provocation. Translucent and even completely transparent clothes were replaced by clothes in which a very realistic illusion of a completely naked body was created. Let’s understand this trend.

A few weeks ago, the British edition of the Daily Mail devoted an entire article to a dress that photographers saw on the streets of London on an unidentified woman. As they say in the material, passersby turned to the girl in amazement. “She looked completely nude in a “naked” dress—perhaps the most revealing in history”.

The article was about the creation of designer Lotta Volkova – the Daily Mail calls “Russian super stylist”. Volkova released the collection in the 90s in collaboration with the brand Jean Paul Gaultier, who sometimes used optical illusions to achieve shocking effect.

Other iconic Gaultier pieces in the Volkov collection, including the “remodeled” and famous cone bra that Madonna wore during her 1990 Blond Ambition tour. But the most discussed piece of the Lotta Volkova x Jean Paul Gaultier collection was exactly this: the “naked” dress for 500 pounds (about 36 thousand rubles).

Lotta Volkova talked about cooperation.

In an interview with Vogue, she also stated that her goal is this. “to convey to the modern public the courage and composure of Jean-Paul Gaultier’s style”:

A photo of Ksenia Chilingarova, the first Russian media to try Volkova’s creativity, also spread in telegram conversations. True, she soon complained that Instagram deleted her photo in a dress, frankly confusing it with a real photo. “nudity”:

Clothing with such a realistic effect of a nude body is likely to become a real trend as it was in previous years, with the same nude dresses worn by almost everyone from Rose McGowan to Kim Kardashian in the 90s. The classic “naked” Marilyn Monroe dress at the last Met Gala.

Most recently, Kylie Jenner wore an image in the spirit of the collaboration between Volkova and Gauthier on the red carpet of the Billboard Music Awards. True, the Balmain dress still looked less provocative due to a more fuzzy print.

An outfit with the same optical illusion was chosen by Natalia Ionova for the award. “Heat”. The singer said she was in her flaming dress. “maximum dress code” – the event was named. But there was a lot of negativity in the comments to the photo on Instagram, with the most moderate of critics saying that the artist “better come naked”.

Previously, Bella Thorne also acted on the red carpet: from afar it seems that the actress came to the premiere of the tape. The “morbius” was wearing something completely sheer, but upon closer inspection it became apparent that she was wearing an illusion dress from designer Sergio Castaño Peña.

ID magazine reminds us that all of this is far from the discovery of 2022, and cites the same example of Gauthier 30 years ago who excited the public’s imagination with outfits imitating tattooed bare skin. The publication also recalls the release of Zendaya two years ago, when the star was wearing a Tom Ford top and repeating the outlines of a bare chest.

The publication also posted photos from recent shows by Loewe, Puppets & Puppets, and other brands, saying: “naked” outfits are now having their next birth. And according to the ID editors, they now have a slightly different meaning:

The response of bold optical illusions is uncertain. Some are delighted, some are shocked, and still others criticize designers for objectifying women and speculating on female sexuality. Femativist Charlotte Proudman talked about the dress in the Volkova and Gauthier collection in an interview with The Sun:

The creators of the collaboration were also accused of plagiarism: on social networks, commentators write about the similarity of the dress with the work of the Spanish fashion brand Syndical Chamber. Gauthier and Volkova shared their co-creation – “Exact copy” of the brand’s clothes, and one of the reviewers added that this is also a bad copy. Even the founder of the Syndicate Room came to the comments and started accusing the authors of copying. Fans of Gaultier also compared the outfits of the same Union Chamber to a dress named after him. The “Greek sculpture” is from the 1996 Jean Paul Gaultier collection and found a lot of common ground. In fact, Gauthier was suspected of stealing ideas from him.

Meanwhile, experts believe that the trend is only gaining popularity and will soon be on all red carpets.
