“It’s totally fictional, but it’s very influential and inspired by our current reality,” says director Maxim Nakonechny of his first film. butterfly visionWhich plays in Un Certain Regard at Cannes tomorrow.
The story tells the story of a young Ukrainian soldier (Rita Burkovska) who returns home after being held captive for months by Russian soldiers, but discovers she is pregnant after her boss was raped. Nakonechni in the film explores the damage a person can cause long after its completion.
Speaking at Deadline’s Cannes studio, the Ukrainian director told us: “After a long time, the traces of the war will disappear, after the war it will disappear. I want to reiterate that war is not just a place where bombings and fires happen “.
Nakonechni worked on the documentary invisible battalion With Irina Tsilik, who played women in the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine after the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014. He was shocked when he found out that one of the characters in the documentary had made a deal with his comrades: that it would be killed if he had the opportunity to go into captivity. Admiring the strength and resilience of these women, Nakonechny wanted to turn the story into another feature film and Cilic helped her write it.
“I’ve started thinking about what’s more horrifying than the death of a captive female soldier,” she said.
The director is one of many directors here in Cannes trying to raise awareness and support his country as it continues to be invaded by Russia.
“I am very grateful that they received me [in Cannes] “But I still feel at war,” he said.
