Narayanan Vijayaraj Alagarswami, better known by his stage name Vijayakanth, passed away at the age of 71.
Vijayakanth, a popular character in Tamil cinema and leader of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam political party, had been ill for some time and died after recently testing positive for Covid.
Vijayakanth appeared in 154 films and earned the nickname Captain from his 1991 action film. Captain Prabhakaran.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among those who paid tribute to Vijayakanth. He said, ‘Extremely saddened by the demise of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of Tamil cinema, his charismatic performances won the hearts of millions.
“As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service and left a lasting impact on the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. His death leaves a void that will be difficult to fill. He was a good friend and I fondly remember meeting him over the years. At this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, his fans and countless followers.”
Vijayakanth is survived by his wife Premalatha and sons Shanmuga Pandian and Vijaya Prabhakaran.
