EXCLUSIVE: Film projects with genre superstars James Wan, Sam Raimi and Roy Lee as producers are being turned into video games by the ambitious new Chinese-American fund Stars-Hana, which we revealed in October.
The fund brings together Peter Luo’s Stars Collective, Chinese company Hana Investment and Starlight Media: the three partners held a launch event in LA last month. The idea is to invest in industries such as film, television, comics, games, collectibles, consumer products, AI and emerging technologies over a three-year period.
Today, the three companies announced the first details of the list, including ambitions to develop video games based on Stars Collective’s film IP.
The fund is working with gaming companies, including Tencent and Tencent-owned DreamSky Technology, as well as HYJZ and Forevernine, to develop games based on the following projects, some of which have already been announced and some of which we are introducing for the first time today:
- The Garfield moviestarring Chris Pratt

- Weightby James Wan and Sam Raimi
- Hunting season by James Wan and Don Murphy
- James Wans The Call of Cthulhu, mass extinction And GMOs
- The Goxfather with Jon M. Chu

Stars Collective is producing all the films mentioned above – most of which are in development – with the exception of Sony’s upcoming film Garfield, for which Stars Collective has an exclusive 25-year trade license in China. Raimi, Lee, Wan and Chu are all involved as producers on the above projects.
Wan recently described it Call of Cthulhu, an adaptation of science fiction author HP Lovecraft’s classic short horror story, as a “dream project” he had been quietly working on for five years. The story is about a man investigating a demonic cult called Cthulhu.
Science fiction thriller GMOsSet in the future, the film focuses on a newly invented drug that solves a global famine, but whose side effects dramatically accelerate the aging process. When “Scott” learns that his estranged father has developed an antidote, he decides to find him and save humanity from extinction at all costs.
In mass extinctionHumans have lost Earth to an alien virus and a research and rescue team is sent from the moon to develop a cure to save humanity. On the way to a cure, they must fight against a variety of mutated animals and humans.
Biopics The Goxfather succeeds Mark Karpeles, who once owned and operated the largest Bitcoin exchange in the world. The sudden disappearance of half a billion dollars worth of customer Bitcoins made him a prisoner.
Stars Collective – a producer of the upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Monkey – and Hana Management are also using their fund to develop three new original film franchises under Stars Collective, all of which will be gamified. It is the Genius Crime franchise, a Kung Fu universe and a new horror franchise with female ghost stories inspired by Asian folklore and legends.
Thai actress Kitty Chicha (Girl from nowhere) will play the lead role in the first part of the folklore series. In the film, a bullied orphan (Chicha) experiences a twisted tale of love and revenge when she encounters a mysterious katana haunted by a vengeful geisha spirit. Amid unexplained deaths among her bullies, she uncovers the truth.
Peter Luo, CEO of Starlight Media and founder of Stars Collective, said: “This initiative represents an important step in merging the worlds of film and gaming, promising a wide range of entertainment options for audiences around the world.” With Hana Investment “We have a great partner who can realize this vision and look forward to exciting new relationships with Tencent and others to deliver exciting new experiences.”
William Li and Nancy Xu, co-CEOs of Stars Collective, added: “There are tremendous opportunities to advance storytelling beyond film, and video games are equally important in terms of their broad impact and ability to enhance intellectual property.” As we delved deeper. in Stars Collective’s IP portfolio, we saw a natural opportunity to connect with audiences through the touchpoints they interact with most to nurture and grow IP. This is why, together with our partners at Hana, we are investing in this area.”
Stars Collective and Hana Investment have also invested in Mokeng, one of China’s leading toy brands, to expand its presence in North America. An international version of the Chinese Mokeng app will be released soon.
China’s Hana Investment is an investment platform of the Korean holding company Hana Financial Group with pan-Asian reach. Hana Investment primarily invests in fast-growing industries in China and abroad, including medical services, energy and media. It has also invested in toys, mobile games, reality shows and food and beverage brands.
