Fashion and esotericism are much more closely connected than you think. Many designers deliberately immerse us in the mysterious world of mythical creatures, mysterious symbols and astrological signs. For example, the industry’s chief rebel Alexander McQueen brought real witches to the catwalks, provocateur John Galliano decorated his collection with constellations in 1997, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen even gave their show guests stones with magical properties.

All this may seem strange to a skeptical group of people. But many designers use the services of tarologists, astrologers, numerologists, shamans and fortune tellers. They also believe in omens and superstitions. For example, workers in some workshops in Paris believe that a piece of tulle should never be hung from the ceiling because it symbolizes death. And dropping a needle is considered a bad sign.

The fashion designer also does not choose the date of the fashion shows by chance. Meanwhile, Riccardo Tisci held his first fashion show for Burberry on September 17 at 17:00 and released the next capsules on that date. And there are a lot of such situations. Today we are talking about five legendary designers who used the services of fortune tellers and believed in esotericism.

Probably everyone knows that the legendary Coco Chanel was superstitious and also believed in numerology, dreams and symbols. One of them was a lion and accompanied the designer throughout his life. Gabrielle Chanel’s zodiac sign is Leo, she had figurines of this animal in her Paris apartment, and after the death of fashion designer Arthur “Boy” Capel, she went to Venice, whose symbol is the lion.

Coco Chanel also considered the number five to be her talisman. And for good reason. Burcu is the fifth in the series, one of the most successful bags was launched in 1955, and the first collection had five main themes: comet, ribbon, bow, fringe and feather. Well, the iconic perfume Chanel No. Let’s not forget 5. If you believe the legend, Chanel relied on the fifth bottle for this very reason. And as we already know, she was right.

Christian Dior

The French designer first consulted a fortune teller when he was 13 and told him: “You will suffer from poverty. But women will bring you luck and you will achieve success thanks to them.” They say that this prophecy affected him so much that he could not make decisions without consulting the oracle Madame Delaye. It was he who persuaded Dior to accept a contract with textile magnate Marcel Boussac and chose the most suitable dates to exhibit his collections.

Only once did the fashion designer ignore the clairvoyant’s warnings – in October 1957. Madame Delaye advised him not to go to the famous Italian resort of Montecatini. He didn’t listen, and the trip ended in tragedy – Christian Dior died at the age of 52 from a heart attack caused by poor eating habits.

Another superstitious designer is Yves Saint Laurent. It is revealed that he often visits fortune tellers and also believes that his dog named Muzhik has superpowers. The legendary fashion designer believed that if a pet sits on a particular item from the collection, it will definitely become a hit. By the way, witnesses say that predictions often come true.

Elsa Schiaparelli

However, Elsa Schiaparelli was interested not only in the occult but also in astrology. In the autumn of 1938, the designer presented the Zodiac collection, dedicated to the solar system and astronomy. It featured a navy blue velvet jacket embellished with sequins, crystals and gold threads. The collectible is painted with 12 zodiac signs, planets, comets and the constellation Ursa Major. The jacket immediately became a hit, and more than 70 years later it was sold at auction for 154 thousand euros (about 15 million rubles). And such a stunning success was no coincidence. Elsa Schiaparelli considered the constellation Ursa Major to be her lucky symbol. His uncle was also an astronomer and assured him that the spots on his nephew’s left cheek corresponded to the constellation Ursa Major.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

Sisters Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, creators of The Row brand, are fond of Tarot cards, they know literally everything about the properties of natural stones and believe in their magical power. Yes, yes, many people really believe that stones can attract good luck, love, success and even money. They can also protect against toxic people and negative situations. So, in 2018, the Olsen brothers sent two stones to everyone invited to the show: black tourmaline, which repels and blocks negative energy, and white quartz, which restores mental and physical balance.
