Since the 1990s Juergen Teller (born in Erlangen 1964) has been one of the most important fashion photographers. Yet he remains an enigmatic personality. The Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris allows you to learn more about his work from 16 December 2023 to 9 January 2024 through an exhibition event, “I need to live” which brings together personal series and professional commissions, but also videos and new installations.

Juergen Teller’s exhibition at the Grand Palais Éphémère for fashion and photography enthusiasts
Through an impressive scenography composed by the 6a architects studio (also responsible for the photographer’s long studio in London), “I need to live” presents, in particular fashion series, on the 10,000 square meters of the Grand Palais Éphémère. Juergen Teller’s touch shines through in the non-retouching and non-pursuit of glamor of her subjects. But also a less well-known part of his work, more personal. For five years he collaborated with his wife, the Lithuanian artist Doville Drizyte, on joint projects that gave life to photos that presented their relationship, their marriage, their role as parents, always with his concern for a realistic realism sometimes grotesque. This is what makes his iconoclastic style so striking in the cozy luxury sector.
Among the most important works by Juergen Teller in this exhibition “I need to live”his series Irene Im Waldmade in Bubenreuth in 2012, it constitutes a sort of love letter to his mother, photographed in the woods near his home and where he grew up. Notes on my work (2021) features several screenshots of comments collected online criticizing its depictions of the magazine’s 2021 Oscar nominees W which had greatly surprised and amused the Internet. Video Go look (1998-1999) e Can I own myself? (1998, with Kate Moss) questions the modeling agency.
Between art and commercials, the 59-year-old photographer, resident in London since 1986, shows himself more and more, often naked, and always ready to put his foot in the thick of things (” tell » means flat in German, after all), to better tell its story. Like a good storyteller.

Exhibition “I need to live” by Juergen Teller, from 16 December 2023 to 9 January 2024 at the Grand Palais Éphémère (2 Pl. Joffre, 75007 Paris).
