It’s the last one SNL In 2023, former Cast MVP Kate McKinnon is hosting, and that just means the cold open had to make do with Rudy Giuliani’s latest legal facial expression — and that’s exactly what the Lorne Michaels-produced show unfortunately didn’t do tonight.
Instead, it’s the latter Saturday Night Live of the year, before Santa comes down the chimney in a week, the long-running NBC show with the 95the annual Christmas awards “live” from the “beautiful and dangerous” downtown LA. A decision that may have resulted in the worst cold start of the entire season so far – and it’s a distinction that will require real effort given the last few weeks.
Starring Heidi Gardner and Bowen Yang as the fictional and ever-annoying Tina Cabrini and E! says John Parker-Lee! The ceremony began in the skit with a joke about “Don’t worry, but if Santa looks different here.” year, is it only because he is on Ozempic.
Whether intentional or not, things didn’t get any better, with “Dad Pretending To Love His Son’s Gift” among the nominees and a lame dig at Mario Lopez. Anyway, things got a lot worse when Kenan Thompson was named the Bravery in Service to Their Family award winner for Grandpa Needs Help in the Bathroom.
“You never want to get that call.” SNL’The nearly perennial performer said receiver Charlie Bell. “But when you do, you go in there and grit your teeth and try not to make eye contact. I am shocked to receive this award.”
The same goes for tonight’s cold opening.
It doesn’t have to be that way. Not really.
Under very different circumstances, it could have been Giuliani time, as the NYPD once said.
Former New York mayor Giuliani is a man better at making fun and self-deprecating than almost any comedian (with the big exception of McKinnon, of course). He was a big loser again this week. On December 15, a federal jury in Georgia awarded Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss $148 million in their defamation lawsuit against the Trump sugar. While Giuliani was spending a stylish time at Philadelphia’s laid-back Four Seasons Total in late 2020, he was often tired and exhausted (to use an old newspaper euphemism) accusing the duo of election fraud in the Peach State in the Joe Biden-Trump campaign – causing a stir Biden won the normally Republican state by a small margin.
This is not the first backlash against Giuliani’s high-profile courtroom depositions in which Freeman and Moss were repeatedly threatened by MAGA gods. In August, U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell found Giuliani guilty of defamation against Freeman and Moss and ordered a compensatory hearing. Giuliani, who unfortunately for comedians never testified in his own defense, and his lawyers say the former presidential candidate will appeal his big loss in the just-concluded trial, resulting in the defendant’s lawyer being described as “the civil equivalent of the lawsuit “the death penalty sought.”
It felt like McKinnon was leaning toward resurrecting the cold, open, ordinary Rudy, the man once known as “America’s Mayor,” when she appeared in the promo for Tonight’s show earlier this week about “missing Giuliani. ” Teeth joked. And that was before the Freeman-Moss ruling came. Speaking of results, given the legacy of Bill Cosby, the man once known as “America’s Father,” and Giuliani’s never-ending fall from grace, perhaps it would be best not to call “America” for a while ‘s Father” to be celebrated. Everything.
Perhaps SNL Stay away from Giulani, the 2020 and 2024 elections and all things politics after last week’s comments coI openly accepted the report on the congressional hearing with Ivy League leaders on combating anti-Semitism on campus. ‘I can not believe it SNL “Chosen to mock those who demand tougher action against anti-Jewish hatred on campus, rather than those who apologize for calls for genocide,” he shouted Jewish Chronicle Editor Jake Wallis Simons, in the opinions of many experts across the political spectrum. Maybe Weekend Update will at least get a handle on Giuliani – we can only dream or hope.
After departure SNL at the end of season 47 in 2022, after ten years as the cast’s North Star, Tonight is Barbie Star McKinnon’s first appearance as host of the show she dominated for so long. It’s actually a bit Barbie Tonight a doubleheader with Billie Eilish as musical guest. This is Eilish’s third appearance SNL, although in 2021 she took on the dual role of presenter and musical guest. Eilish sang the much-streamed “What I Was Made For?” tune from the Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie-led trailer.
SNL returns on January 20th Pricilla’with Elvis Jacob Eloordi and Renee Rapp as the first presenter and musical guest of 2024.
