Since the repeal of Roe v. Wade in June 2022 in the United States, reactionary offensives against the right to abortion are increasing in several American states. As a result, in countries where abortion is still protected by law, clinics have observed a explosion of requests, according to a report by the Guttmacher Institute.
In Illinois, the number of abortions on patients living out of state has doubled
Such as in Illinois, clinics have Double the percentage of abortions performed on patients living out of state. In 2020, 21% of patients receiving abortion care in Illinois were from out of state; in 2023 this figure will rise to 42%, reports the study released by The Guardian.
At the Hope Clinic, located near the Illinois-Missouri border, where abortion is banned, the clinic’s waiting room has begun to fill with patients from places like Tennessee and Arkansas, or even Texas, they report our British colleagues.
Clinics that are strengthening their staff to accommodate more patients
Just like Trust Women, an abortion clinic in Wichita, Kansas, is now closest to patients in Houston, Texas. Kansas then experienced an increase of 79% abortions in 2023, compared to 2020, most performed on female patients from out of stateagain according to the Guttmacher report.

According to the report, many clinics are offering more and more appointments each week, to keep up with the increase in patients coming from other states. Trust Women even tripled its staff. Despite all their efforts, given the influx of patients, hundreds of women are still turned away every week.
A worrying situation. Because as clinics close across the country, and as offensives to further curtail abortion rights in the United States increase, more patients will flock to a limited number of clinics, making the situation unmanageable. As a reminder, abortion is now almost entirely banned in fourteen states.
