Precarious, rich, somewhere in between? For many French people, knowing how to fit into the appropriate social class is far from easy. If sure minimize of their social conditions and their wealth, others are not necessarily aware of the precariousness in which they live. Clearly the perception that everyone can have of their own luck sometimes is far from reality.
To remedy this, INSEE and the Inequalities Observatory have addressed the issue. Last October they published a document to differentiate social categories.
A distinction based on individual income
The criteria that distinguish the classes are used “Avoid calling people whose incomes are in the top 10% ‘average’ and who therefore have nothing to do with the ‘average.’ »we read in the document.
So, to consider how poora person must have a monthly disposable income below the poverty line, i.e 941 euros per month. Then, the working classes would include every single person whose income is in the bottom 30%, i.e., those who earn less than 1,495 euros per month.
The category of the middle classes is located just above, between the working classes and the wealthy classes. The latter are made up of single people whose income falls within the Top 20%or whoever wins more than 3,762 euros per month, double the average income.
Figures that vary depending on the composition of the family unit
A distinction which, according to the two organizations, still entails a disadvantage: that of using only income. According to them, ” it doesn’t say much about people’s social status. For example, a young manager may have a salary that does not place him among the best paid, but he occupies a particular position in the social hierarchy “, we can read.
Therefore the researchers recommend taking into consideration, in addition to income, also one’s profession. But also according to the composition of the family unit, according to the data in a table drawn up by the two organizations, published on The network diary. This is how a couple without children earns less than 1,411 euros considered precariousjust like a winning couple less than 3,738 euros per month with more than two children over 14 years of age.
