Lyon stands out once again. After having introduced leave for those who request it in the event of painful menstruation or natural termination of pregnancy, the Municipality will now offer longer paternity leave to new fathers.
The extension of paternity leave in Lyon
This is a first in France and we hope that this measure will spread throughout the country. The purpose of this decision? Allow for a better balance of duties between men and women when the baby is born. This measure is expected to be voted on in the next city council, on December 21, 2023. Laurent Bosetti, deputy mayor of Lyon, explains this decision:
We wanted to act resolutely for gender equality by enabling fathers to fully invest in the crucial period of childcare, during which many things are at stake in terms of family organization, distribution of household tasks and parent-child relationships. For this reason we have equated paternity leave to maternity leave.
Laurent BOSETTI, deputy mayor of Lyon with responsibility for the promotion of public services
Please note that from July 2021 in France fathers can benefit from 25 days of paid paternity leave (including weekends) in addition to the three days of birth leave.
