The Commission on Presidential Debates has scheduled three presidential debates for next fall, with a slightly earlier schedule.
The three debates are now scheduled for September 16 at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas; Oct. 1 at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va.; and Oct. 9 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
A vice presidential debate is scheduled for September 25 at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.
Debates begin at 9:00 PM ET and last 90 minutes.
What is unclear is the involvement.
The committee clashed with the Republican National Committee over the timing and format of the debate. Last year, the RNC withdrew from the committee that has organized general election debates since 1987. The RNC complained that the committee was “biased” and called for a number of changes. Nevertheless, the candidates themselves decide whether to participate and there is nothing that prevents an alternative attempt to organize a debate.
Donald Trump attacked the general election debates and their moderators, refusing to attend the second event scheduled in the 2020 cycle after the committee decided to hold it virtually after he was treated for Covid. He participated in a final debate during the cycle.
The committee also postponed the schedule of debates. The first debate of 2020 took place on September 29; in the next cycle it will be two weeks earlier. The RNC asked the committee to reset the schedule due to widespread early voting.
In a series of national surveys, the commission also set a 15 percent threshold for approval. In most cycles, this resulted in only major party candidates running. Ross Perot was the last non-Democratic or Republican candidate to participate in a major presidential debate when he appeared on stage with President George HW Bush and Bill Clinton in 1992.
The primary debates are organized by the party in collaboration with a host network. But for decades, general election debates have been organized by the bipartisan committee and aired on broadcast, cable and streaming networks.
