Daryl Hall, one half of one of the most successful pop duos in US chart history, Hall & Oates, is suing John Oates and has filed an injunction against his bandmate.
Hall filed the lawsuit Nov. 16 in Nashville Chauncery Court, a court spokesperson confirmed to Deadline, but the documents, classified as a contract/debt matter, are sealed so details are not known. Philadelphia Magazine reports that the documents include a request by Hall for a temporary restraining order against Oates, which was granted and will take effect on November 30.
Hall and Oates formed the Philadelphia duo in 1970. During their peak years, between 1974 and 1991, the pair reached the US Top 40 with 29 of their 33 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Six of the singles reached number 1: Girl” (1977), “Kiss on My List” (1980), the two 1981 releases “Private Eyes” and “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)”, “Maneater (1982) and “Out of Touch” (1984). Seven of her albums have been certified platinum and six gold by the RIAA.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times last year, Hall said: “I have no plans to work with John. I mean, whatever. Only time will tell.” While they recorded together “before the pandemic,” he noted that “the perception has changed.”
“Life has changed, everything has changed,” Hall said. “I’m more interested in pursuing my own world. And this also applies to Johannes.”
Hall also suggested on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast last year that the two didn’t get along, saying, “You think John Oates is my partner?”…He’s my business partner. He is not my creative partner.”
The duo was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and was officially inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
