Elon Musk has vowed to file a so-called “thermonuclear lawsuit” against progressive media watchdog Media Matters and others, as the list of companies suspending their ads on his social media platform grows longer.
On Friday evening, Musk posted the following on X, formerly known as Twitter:
“The court will open in a split second on Monday. X Corp is going to file a thermonuclear lawsuit against Media Matters and EVERYONE who participated in this fraudulent attack on our company.”
And he added an explanation why supporting X is the same as supporting free speech.

Musk has previously threatened to sue critics but has not followed through. When the Anti-Defamation League criticized the platform in September for increasing anti-Semitic and other hate speech, Musk promised to sue, but no charges were filed. He blamed ADL for a 60% drop in advertising.
Through X/Twitter, Musk sued another watchdog group, the Center for Countering Digital Hate, for defamation last summer. The group filed a motion to dismiss and an anti-SLAPP motion on Thursday. She argued the platform “made unsubstantiated claims” and questioned the way the CCDH collected her data.

On Wednesday, Musk wrote a post spotlighting the “great replacement theory,” the claim that Jewish people want to bring undocumented non-white people to Western countries to reduce the influence of white people. The convicted murderer in the Tree of Life shooting adopted this theory.
“You spoke the truth,” Musk replied.
Musk later tried to clarify his stance by calling the Anti-Defamation League a group that “unfairly attacks the majority of the West, even though the majority of the West supports the Jewish people and Israel.”
Media is important
Media Matters reported on the large brand ads appearing alongside Nazi content on the platform. Among those mentioned were IBM, Apple, Comcast Xfinity, Oracle and Bravo. On Friday, the White House joined those condemning the strengthening of the anti-Semitic theme. “It is unacceptable to repeat the hideous lie behind the deadliest act of anti-Semitism in American history at any time, let alone a month after the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust,” said Andrew Bates , spokesman for the White House.
Bates referenced the 2018 Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh and the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
Bates added: “We condemn in the strongest possible terms this abhorrent promotion of anti-Semitic and racist hatred, which goes against our core values as Americans.”
