The leather jacket Michael Jackson wore while filming a Pepsi commercial nearly four decades ago has been auctioned in London for £250,000 ($306,000).
Jackson wore the jacket while filming a Pepsi commercial in 1984, shortly after his record breaking success with the Pepsi commercial thriller Album. The Pepsi commercial gained notoriety due to an incident in which Jackson’s hair caught fire during filming and he was badly burned. He later said his painkillers for his injuries were the reason for his dependence on prescription drugs.
The coat was one of more than 20 items, including a coat originally worn by George Michael and a hairpiece worn by Amy Winehouse, as well as items related to David Bowie, Oasis and the Beatles, which were auctioned on Friday .
Other items up for auction included items related to Elvis Presley, Queen and Johnny Marr, formerly of The Smiths. There was also a Gibson guitar formerly owned by Angus Young of AC/DC and a limited edition Yellow Submarine Beatles jukebox.
George Michael’s jacket – seen in the video he recorded with Aretha Franklin for the hit song I knew you were waiting (for me). – sold for £93,750 ($115,000), well above the top guide price of £60,000.
This isn’t Jackson’s first memorabilia sale. A black fedora he wore shortly before the debut of his signature moonwalk dance in 1983 was auctioned in Paris in September for €77,640 (£67,088).
