According to data sent by the Ministry of Justice AFP On Friday 10 October, the volume of proceedings for sexual violence or rape of a spouse in France more than doubled compared to 2017.
A 164% increase
This increase amounts to 164% between 2017 and 2022, going from 1,377 defendants to 3,641 According to the president of the Observatory of Violence against Women of Seine-Saint-Denis, interviewed by AFPthese statistics reflect not so much an increase in incidents, but an increase in reports and a strengthening of the fight against sexual violence.
Mechanically, convictions are also seeing a notable increase. Regarding sexual violence against a spouse, 298 people were convicted in 2022, compared to 205 in 2017, an increase of 45%. As for convictions for marital rape, they increased by 130% in five years, going from 54 convictions in 2017 to 123 in 2022.
Spouse rape has been recognized by criminal jurisprudence since 1990 and constitutes an aggravating circumstance punishable by 20 years in prison, by a 2006 law.
