Ukraine’s top military aid worker was killed by a “birthday bomb” after it exploded, also “seriously injuring” his 13-year-old son.

A senior aide to Ukraine’s military commander died on his birthday after one of his gifts exploded at his home in Kiev on Monday, “seriously injuring” his 13-year-old son in a “tragic accident”.

Major Hennadiy Chastyakov was killed by a fatal explosion that detonated in one of them [his] Birthday gifts,” Valeriy Zaluzhnyy, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, said in a statement on Telegram.

Photos taken from inside Chastyakov’s home show several grenade-shaped objects lying next to what appears to be a box for a bottle of alcohol, as well as a package from a Ukrainian clothing brand.

According to a Telegram message from Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, the explosion was caused by a gift box containing six grenades given to him by his colleagues, which he began to show off.

“The boy first took the ammunition in his hand and started spinning the ring,” Klymenko wrote about the incident. “The soldier then snatched the grenade from the child and pulled the ring, causing a tragic explosion.”

Police said the explosion at the family’s apartment in Chaiky, on the western outskirts of Kiev, was “a result of careless handling of ammunition.”

Police, who are still investigating the incident, found five more live grenades in Chastyakov’s home.

Ukrainian police have since discovered which of Khastyakov’s comrades gave him the gift and have since gone to his home to take two more grenades from him.

Chastyakov leaves behind his wife and four children. It is currently unknown if anyone other than his 13-year-old son was injured in the explosion.

Zaluzhnyy, his boss, said of his death: “Unspeakable pain and serious loss for the armed forces of Ukraine and for me personally.”

“My deepest condolences go out to the family.”

While some moments of the Russian invasion may not paint a good picture of Ukraine, others, including the military’s destruction of one of Putin’s newly built warships in a daring missile strike, do.

Russian and Ukrainian media report Askold, Russia’s newest missile carrier (pictured), was hit in a missile attack in Crimea on November 4, 2023.

The downed ship was described as a newly built Askold missile ship, one of the most modern in Vladimir Putin’s fleet.

Moscow admitted it had lost a ship in an attack by 13 cruise missiles, but did not say which ship.

Since launching a counteroffensive against Moscow’s forces this summer, Kiev has stepped up attacks on the peninsula to suppress Russia’s naval fleet in the Black Sea.

According to state media, the Russian Defense Ministry said: “On November 4, the Ukrainian military launched 15 cruise missiles at the BE Butoma (Zaliv) shipyard in the city of Kerch.”

“Air defense systems shot down thirteen cruise missiles.” A ship located near the factory was damaged by a hit from an enemy cruise missile.

The ministry did not provide any information on how badly the ship was damaged or which ship was attacked.
