Protagonist of the fresh food sections and of the diets of those who want to be careful about what they put on their plate, Skyr would be THE ultimate healthy yogurt. Natural or flavoured, it can be consumed alone or accompanied by granola. Rich in protein and low in fat, it would be the perfect snack. Only problem: it would be much less recommendable than we think. In any case this is what the association says. UFC-Que Choisir in an article with a title quite indicative of its content: “The Skyr, an Icelandic scam”.

An abnormally high price
Skyr is a rather expensive product. On average, for the Monoprix Gourmet and Siggi’s brands it would be sold for around 9 euros per kilo. According to UFC-Que Choisir, this price would be 3 and 6 times more expensive than low-fat cottage cheese. But what justifies this cost? For starters, a longer drain could quickly increase your bill, but that’s not all! Its protein content (estimated to be 30% higher than low-fat cottage cheese) is also in question. The problem is that we don’t necessarily need to consume that much protein every day. This is what Stéphane Walrand, researcher in human nutrition at the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (Inrae), says for UFC-Que Choisir. He explains :
“The vast majority of French people, including vegetarians, get more than enough protein.”
A theory confirmed by Claire Gaudichon, nutrition and eating behavior expert at the same Institute.
“Our consumption is generally equivalent to that recommended for endurance athletes. It is therefore rarely useful to increase it, even if you regularly practice physical activity. »
A questionable appetite suppressant effect
The main benefit attributed to Skyr is its nutritious and appetite suppressant side. Unfortunately, this last point has yet to be proven according to Claire Gaudichon. “Most of the studies that suggest that do not observe it below a content of 20 g of protein per serving,” specifies Anestis Dougkas, milk protein specialist at the Lyfe institute.. However, Skyr contains only 2-3 grams more than the classic low-fat white cheese, which is a non-negligible quantity. “insufficient to have an effect on satiety”. Especially since their thick consistency can quickly make them nauseating. Result? We consume less of it and very quickly we can get hungry again.
What to choose then?
Skyrs are often compared to Petits Suisses or even high-protein desserts like HiPro. But are these two yogurts really good alternatives? Unfortunately the answer is no. While Petits Suisses contain as much protein as Skyr, they are surrounded by a film soaked in preservatives.
But what about desserts? HiPro? Again, their additional content is a major obstacle to their recommendation. Sin…
