Joe Biden’s concerns about AI increased after watching Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning part one is cited as one of the main reasons why President Joe Biden has become even more concerned about the impact of artificial intelligence.

According to White House Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed, he and Biden saw the film at Camp David over the weekend.

“If he wasn’t already worried about what could go wrong with AI before this film, he would have seen even more reason to worry,” Reed told the Associated Press.

The villain in the Tom Cruise film is a sentient rogue AI called “The Entity” who sinks a submarine and kills its crew in the first minutes of the film.

Biden was already worried after seeing AI deepfakes of himself. In his remarks Monday at the signing of an executive order imposing curbs on the rapidly developing technology, Biden said, “I was looking at one of my questions: ‘When the hell did I say that?'” he joked. “All joking aside, a three-second recording of your voice to create an imitation good enough to fool your family – or yourself. I swear to God. Look at it. It’s wonderful. And they can use it to trick loved ones into sending money because they think you’re in trouble.”

The executive order requires AI companies to report their security test results to the US government. The decision also calls on the federal government to develop best practices for employers to “minimize the harm and maximize the benefit of AI.” However, it is unclear whether this will be enforceable in any way. This is especially relevant to the current labor unrest in Hollywood, as AI continues to be a key topic in SAG-AFTRA talks with studios wanting continued flexibility in their use of the technology.

Biden’s executive order also includes steps to eliminate deep lying. The order does not require AI companies to label AI-generated content, but directs the Commerce Department to develop standards for authentication and watermarking.

Reed told the AP that Biden was “as impressed and concerned as anyone.”

“He saw fake AI images of himself and his dog,” Reed said. “He saw how this could lead to bad poetry. And he saw and heard the incredible and terrifying technology of voice cloning, which can turn three seconds of your voice into a completely fake conversation.”
