Saturday Night Live recommended another Joe Biden is out in the cold tonight, this time with Mikey Day portraying the POTUS in an unusual Halloween sketch with a cameo from Christopher Walken.
Day is the latest character to play Biden, as James Austin Johnson played the president last season and Jim Carrey played him during the 2020 election season.
The cold open was somewhat disjointed, like three skits in one, starting with Biden walking slowly, putting up Halloween decorations in the Oval Office and proving that at 80 he can climb a ladder. Then there was a visit from the new speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson (Michael Longfellow), with his black son, also named Mike. “Nobody knows her last name,” the new spokesperson told the president.
And then Walken came to visit.
“They call me Papa Pumpkin,” Walken said before reading a poem.
“Trick or treat, rub my feet, give me something nice to eat.” If not, I don’t care. I’ll take off your underwear.’
The chill started with Day mimicking Biden’s speaking style while the POTUS was setting up decorations and insisting, “I’m not out of breath.” I’m just excited because Halloween is the biggest holiday in the world. The world.”
“Well, look, here’s the bottom line. The world is a very scary place right now. Wars, shootings, climate change, all in the new Britney book.
He added: “I want everyone to feel comfortable. Nothing calms anyone down more than an 80-year-old man putting up Halloween decorations.”
Then “your old boy Joe” climbed the ladder and proved he could still do it. “When I was a kid, a ladder was the latest technology. It looked like an iPad.”
Later, Biden picked up a severed arm and realized “it’s not a decoration. It’s an arm that our dog commander took from a Secret Service agent.” In real life, the Bidens’ dog has bitten several officers and staff.
The age jokes continued in the sketch as Biden admitted, “I love Halloween. In fact, a lot of my best friends are ghosts. So I have a plan for Halloween. It’s called Boo-Back Boo-er.” (A play on Build Back Better.)
The plan, Biden said, includes “all the classics — goblins, ghosts and of course the Grim Reaper, who I physically fight every day.”
What is an indication of how long Biden has been on the national stage or how difficult he has been? SNL It should be noted that it has also been performed by a number of other artists. In addition to Day, Johnson and Carrey, he is satirized by Kevin Nealon, Woody Harrelson, John Mulaney, Alex Moffat and Jason Sudeikis. When he hosted in 2021, Sudeikis even appeared in a sketch as “the ghost from the Biden past” for Johnson’s current POTUS.
It was almost certain SNL would contain a reference to the biggest political news of the week, the election of the unknown and ultra-conservative Johnson as the new leader and second in line for presidential candidates. SNL Johnson’s anonymity played, but also a little-known part of his private life: He and his wife raised a black teenager, Michael, as a son. However, the boy is now an adult and does not appear in family photos on Johnson’s website. Johnson’s office explained that this was because Michael did not want to be involved in the family’s public life.
In the sketch, Michael, the boy, says about his adoptive father: “I am his grown black son. I am only 11 years younger than him and a little secretive. This is normal. Don’t look at this at all.”
There is more to come.
