The investigation into the disappearance of rugby player Levi Davis has been closed by Spanish authorities, a year after he disappeared from an Irish bar in Barcelona.

Authorities have confirmed that the court’s investigation is continuing. According to judicial sources, the decision is “interim” as police investigations have yielded no results.

An insider told The Sun the case could be reopened if new evidence comes to light.

Mr Davis, a rugby player and X Factor: Celebrity guest, disappeared on October 29, 2022 after traveling alone from Ibiza to Barcelona.

Police concluded in April that they believed 24-year-old Davis likely drowned after a witness on a cruise ship claimed to have seen a man matching his description in the sea that day he disappeared.

In May, divers searched the area but found nothing to further the case.

The update comes just days before the anniversary of Mr Davis’ disappearance on October 29 last year.

The suspension of the proceedings has no impact on the ongoing investigation by the Spanish police. However, the investigation is considered inactive.

Mr Davis’ disappearance remains a mystery to police, but the prevailing theory is that he drowned off the coast of Barcelona on the day he disappeared.

The Ealing Trailfinders winger was last seen leaving Barcelona’s Old Irish Pub on the famous Rambla.

Surveillance cameras caught him leaving the restaurant after just 35 minutes at 10:05 p.m. He ordered a beer while watching football on TV.

He walked the short distance north on Rambla to the nearby Hard Rock Café before turning south again towards the port.

Earlier this year, investigators said they discovered that Mr. Davis’ phone signal was last received in the early morning hours of October 30 from a telephone pole near the harbor.

His passport was found on a nearby bank a few days after his disappearance.

Catalan police began searching for Mr Davis on November 8, before receiving an official missing person report from a friend in Ibiza on November 12.

Officials also spoke to four crew members of a cruise ship that docked in Barcelona at 6:30 a.m. on October 30 – the day after Levi’s disappearance – who reported seeing a man in the sea wearing the same light-colored top as Levi .

They said the man screamed for help several times in English.

A lifebuoy was thrown to him, but a subsequent search by police and coastguards failed to find anyone.

Officials initially said the drowning was only “one line of inquiry” and others had not been ruled out.

Julie Davis, his mother, criticized the Spanish police investigation as “slow”.

She also claimed her son was depressed at the time of his disappearance after struggling with “money worries” and “racial prejudice” during his career.

The case was handed over to a specialized investigation unit in February 2023.

The Mossos d’Esquadra told The Sun that their separate investigation would also remain open.
