In 2022, sexist abuse continues to increase, reports a Ministry study

On Thursday 26 October, the ministerial statistical service for internal security published a new study confirming the increase in sexist acts recorded since the 2018 law.

In case you doubt it, street harassment is far from eradicated. According to the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security, sexist abuse recorded a further increase (22%) in 2022, with 2,800 crimes recorded. While this figure is lower than the increase recorded the previous year (62% in 2021 compared to 2020), the study, published on Thursday 26 October and broadcast by AFP, identifies a total of 7,600 offenses from the 2018 law.

Women, first objectives

The 2018 text defines sexist contempt as a crime consisting in imposing on a person any statement or behavior with a sexual or sexist connotation that violates their dignity due to its degrading or humiliating character, or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive situation in his regards. This results in insults, inappropriate and degrading comments, serious advances or sexist interjections, catcalls, etc.

From 1 April 2023, crimes of sexist outrage with aggravating circumstances have become misdemeanors. Contempt is considered “ get worse » if committed by a person who abuses his authority, on a vulnerable person or if it takes place on public transport.

According to Ministry data, 79% of confirmed crimes are committed anyway “without aggravating circumstances”.

From a demographic point of view, the vast majority of victims are women (91%), aged under 30 in 61% of cases. On the contrary, the authors are almost exclusively men (97%). The study also notes geographic disparities. Crimes are recorded more in large cities, with an average of eight sexist acts per 100,000 inhabitants. Paris tops the list for the number of crimes (197 on average per year), followed by Loiret (101), North (71) and Rhône (57).
