Comedian Dave Chappelle used a tour stop in North Carolina on Wednesday to claim that reports of his alleged statements about the Israel-Hamas conflict in Boston last weekend were all “hearsay.”
“Right now I’m in trouble because the Jewish community is upset,” Chappelle said during his show in North Carolina, according to the New York Times. “But I can’t say it enough: No matter what you read about that program in Boston, you will never find quotes surrounding what I said. You don’t know what I said.”
The Wall Street Journal reported that viewers walked out of Chappelle’s show in Boston when he addressed the Middle East.
“The other day I said something about Palestine in Boston and was misquoted around the world,” the comedian said. “And I won’t repeat what I said.”
A woman in the audience shouted “Free Palestine” in response, the Times reported.
“Please, please, ma’am,” he said. “Listen. Don’t start or I’ll be in the news cycle for another week. What’s happening in the Middle East is bigger than anything else.”
He called the situation in Israel a “nightmare” but added: “What is happening in Palestine is a nightmare.”
“There are only two kinds of people in the world: the people who love other people and the people who have things that make them afraid to love other people. Pray for everyone in Israel. Pray for everyone in Palestine,” he said, the Times reported.
Chappelle does not allow phones at his shows, so there is no audio/video recording of the Boston show.
