In his new report” Being black in the EU », published on Wednesday 25 October, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights calculated that almost half of black people living in the EU have faced racism in their daily lives. A phenomenon that is increasing compared to 2016, the date of the previous report, when 39% of those interviewed then declared “I have been a victim of racism for the last five years [dernières] years “. Today they are 45%.
Only 9% of victims report it
The study also shows that few report this discrimination (9%), despite 30% of respondents saying they have experienced racist harassment. The professional environment is not spared: 31% of those interviewed report discrimination at work.
Another impressive figure: 12% of those interviewed said they had been arrested by the police in the year preceding the survey. And in 58% of cases they believe they have been victims of racial profiling, a practice often denounced by associations and organisations, particularly in France by the Rights Defender.
Disparities by country
The 13 EU countries are not equal on these issues. 72% of blacks in Austria and 76% in Germany say they have been victims of racism, compared to 56% in Belgium or 26% in Portugal.
In France this percentage rises to 37%, down compared to 2016 (46%). On the other hand, the rate of racial profiling by the police is particularly high in France, where 48% of those interviewed say they have experienced it.
Concluding its report, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights calls on Member States to do so “ correctly apply anti-discrimination legislation », implement “specific policies » but also to “collect data on equality, including ethnic origin or racial », a practice banned in France, as our colleagues claim franceinfo. The organization also calls on the EU to do so “take measures to prevent and eradicate institutional practices and discriminatory police culture “.
