Attorney Jenna Ellis, a frequent media presence with her false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump, pleaded guilty today in the Georgia election case.
Ellis, Trump’s former legal adviser, pleaded guilty to one felony count: aiding and abetting false statements and writings.
She was sentenced to five years probation, $5,000 in restitution and 100 hours of community service.
In court, Ellis said with a trembling voice that she failed to do her “due diligence” in investigating allegations that the election was rigged.
“I believe in and value election integrity,” Ellis said. “Had I known then what I know now, I would have refused to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges. I look back on this whole experience with deep regret.”
She told the judge that she had already accepted responsibility to the Colorado Bar Association, which found her guilty. “I now accept responsibility in this court and apologize to the people of Georgia.”
Ellis is the fourth suspect in Fulton County. District Attorney Fani Willis pleaded guilty in the case. In August, she filed racketeering charges against Trump and 18 other defendants over their efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state won by Joe Biden. Two other lawyers involved in the effort, Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell, pleaded guilty last week.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to the Georgia charges, one of four cases in which he is being prosecuted. The former president finds himself in a New York courtroom today, where he and his companies are at the center of a civil bank fraud scheme. Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer, is expected to testify.
