We have all already made the unpleasant observation that waterproof mascara is very difficult to remove once dry, and this, even with the best makeup remover on the market. Pleasant tenacity in key periods of the year such as summer, but which can, in the long term, cause eye problems. It is anyway the overwhelming observation made by Dr. Alexa Hecht, optometrist (eye health expert) in a video lasting more than 30 seconds posted to her TikTok account.
The latter explains in a few words the dangers of waterproof makeup:
“Waterproof makeup doesn’t dissolve in our tears. It can actually stay in our eyes and clog our oil glands.”.
She continues:
“In very bad scenarios, it can get stuck under the eyelid, get trapped there and cause eye irritation and dryness.”.

Beware of toxic products in waterproof makeup!
According to one study American study conducted by the University of Notre-Dame, 82% of waterproof mascaras contain fluoride, an indicator of the presence of PFASalso called perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances. An indicator that does not bode well for our health since, in the long term, PFAS pose a real danger to human health. Liver function disorders, increased cholesterol, decreased immune defenses, especially in children… Here are some side effects linked to contact with this type of substance. Results considered worrying by Graham Peaslee, professor of physics at Notre Dame:
“These are products applied around the eyes and mouth with the potential for absorption through the skin or through the tear duct, as well as possible inhalation or ingestion. PFAS is a persistent chemical: when it enters the bloodstream, it stays there and accumulates. There is also an additional risk of environmental contamination associated with the production and disposal of these products, which could affect many more people. »
In short, we will think twice the next time we apply waterproof mascara…
