Kelsey Grammer auditioned for Han Solo in STAR WARS and talks about that experience

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Frasier star Kelsey Grammer he auditioned for the role of Han Solo in George Lucas’ Star Wars. During a recent interview, the actor spoke about his experience and shared his reaction to seeing it Harrison Ford in the finished film years later.

Grammer was one of many actors who read for the role of Han Solo. Some of the others included Al Pacino, Kurt Russell, Christopher WalkenAND Burt Reynolds.

As for Grammer’s experience, he said one of his college professors put him in touch with the agent to “[a] guy doing a casting for a movie about space.” He recalled his experience, saying:

“I walk around and knock on the door, sure enough, they call me, I sit down and there it is. I didn’t know George Lucas at the time. “We’re doing this thing about…[it’s] a fairy tale in space. You know, two boys save a princess.’

“Great, that sounds like fun. So he said ‘You’re right for… well, there’s two parts… maybe the older guy. He’s kind of, you know, a gunslinger. You know, an adventurer.’ .””

Grammer never heard back from Lucas or anyone else involved with the film after that experience, and only when he ended up seeing the film in theaters did he realize that the project had moved forward and was made without him. He said:

“I’m watching it for a while longer and, ‘Holy shit, this is that movie. This is that thing the guy told me about. It’s them. It’s… oh, my God.’ And, you know, either I dodged a bullet or I missed a great opportunity.”

A few years later Grammer’s big break came when he was cast as Dr. Frasier Crane Greetings. It’s so hard to imagine Grammer as a badass adventurer-type character like Han Solo! The character doesn’t seem like a good fit for him at all, but there’s a reason Lucas didn’t choose him.

Regardless, Grammer has had a truly fantastic career and even ended up in a major franchise taking on the role of Beast in X-Men: The Last Stand and a reprisal of the character in X-Men: Days of Future Past. He also appeared in Star Trek.

What do you think of Kelsey Grammer as Han Solo? Star Wars? Do you think it could have worked? What if Kelsey Grammer and Harrison Ford switched places? What if Grammer got the role of Solo and Ford got the role of Dr. Frasier Crane!? What a strange world it would have been.
