The world’s oldest dog died just five months after his 31st birthday on the Portuguese family farm where he had spent his entire life.
The owner of a wildlife photography studio in Lisbon announced the sad news overnight. A photo of Bobi was posted on social media with the message: “Rest in peace friend.” Thank you for the privilege of meeting you, the oldest dog in the world.”
The post continued: “What a wonderful life you’ve had.”
Bobi was awarded the Guinness World Records title as the world’s oldest dog in February, replacing a Chihuahua that lived in Ohio in the US.
Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo – a Portuguese cattle breed – is also recorded as the world’s oldest ever dog. The previous record was held by an Australian cattle dog who died in 1939 at the age of 29 years and five months.

Bobi’s age was reportedly verified by his vet and a pet database approved by the Portuguese government.
In 1992, Bobi was registered with the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria. The organization confirmed Bobi’s date of birth.
His age was verified by SIAC, a pet database authorized by the Portuguese government and managed by the National Veterinary Association.
Bobi’s owner, Leonel Costa, held a birthday party for the farm dog in the village of Conqueiros in Portugal’s Leiria district on May 11, but has yet to comment on his dog’s death.
The more than 100 birthday guests, some of whom came from abroad, were served local meat and fish, with a bonus for Bobi, who only eats human food.
Leonel Costa, now 38, was just eight years old when his beloved pet was born in an outbuilding where his family stored wood.
When Bobi turned 31, he said:[He] has been a fighter all these years, only he knows how to persevere. It shouldn’t be easy because the average life expectancy of a dog is not that long and if he just talks he can explain this success.
“We are very happy and grateful that life allows us to have Bobi in our daily life after 30 years.”

He went on to attribute the animal’s longevity to the “quiet, peaceful environment it lives in, its diet of human food and its freedom.”
Bobi, who apparently survived when Leonel’s father was killed along with his two brothers shortly after birth due to his escape, was never chained or leashed.
His old age was also linked to his genes. Bobi’s mother, Gira, turned 18 and another family dog, Chicote, turned 22.
Animal lovers immediately responded to the news of Bobi’s death with messages expressing their grief, including the words: “What a sad day.”
“What a long and happy life Bobi had.” Run free and happy.”
