Even if it touches 14 million women in France, menopause remains a taboo topic for many of them. On the occasion of World Menopause Day, the MGEN joint fund and the Women’s Foundation published on Wednesday 18 October a survey identified by SHEwhich returns to this taboo.
One in three people doesn’t dare broach the topic of menopause
Self 80% The French, of all genders, believe that we should talk openly about the topic of menopause, but doing so is something completely different. Because 35% of those interviewed, or one in three, do not dare broach the topic. Even worse: only 39% of women dare to talk about it with their partneror less than half. Furthermore, a third of French people who are in a relationship with a woman between the ages of 45 and 60 are unable to tell whether their partner is in menopause or not.
And for good reason, 38% of women surveyed rate this topic as “difficult” OR “taboo», compared to 27% of men. As a result, the survey reveals that the majority of women (61%) talk about their menopause first with healthcare professionals. In second place are friends, with 49%, and their family with 42%.
28% of women admit to hiding the effects of perimenopause
In addition to the taboo of menopause, the study also mentions inequalities in the face of aging: two thirds of French people (66%) believe that men and women are treated differently at work as well as in public spaces. As a result, 28% of the women interviewed admit to having hidden the effects of perimenopause in their private lives and 26% in their professional lives.
87% of women still believe they will experience menopause peacefully. But information is lacking: 37% of pre-menopausal women say they are not sufficiently informed on the topic.
