After a drastic decline due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of abortions increased in France in 2022. It thus reached its highest level since 1990, reveals a study by the Department of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Drees) , published Wednesday 27 September.
Thereby, 234,300 In 2022, voluntary terminations of pregnancy were recorded in France, which is 7,000 more than in 2021. These are mainly voluntary terminations of pregnancy for medical reasons, carried out outside of hospital.
An increase due to the simplification of abortion measures
This increase in abortions can be explained in several ways: first, by the extension of the deadline for abortion, which increased from 12 to 14 weeks of pregnancy at the beginning of 2022. These abortions represent 20% of the 7,000 additional interventions registered in one year.
But above all, the fact that from 2021 women no longer have to pay up front for the costs of exams and interventions that cost several hundred euros. They can also request anonymity and carry out the entire process via teleconsultation, taking the medicine at home. The practice, authorized during the first confinement, has been perpetuated.
The study highlights that it is above all medical abortions that develop and represent 78% of abortions, or almost eight out of ten. For comparison, they accounted for 68% of abortions in 2019 and 31% in 2000. Half (51%) of medical abortions are performed in a hospital facility. Since 2020, the criteria for medical abortion have evolved. Women can now practice them up to nine weeks of pregnancy, instead of the previous seven.
