St. on the weekend You don’t need a reason for a spontaneous trip to St. Petersburg, but you still have one in the last days of September. On September 29 and 30, the Wawelberg Hall will present the opera-drama “The Third Card”, based on Alexander Pushkin’s story “The Queen of Spades” and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera of the same name.

“The Third Card” was created specifically for Wawelberg Hall with its neo-Renaissance interiors. Two historical facts add to the ambiance: the Wawelberg Hall was a bank’s operating room in pre-revolutionary times, and next door, 10, on Malaya Morskaya, is the home of Princess Golitsina, the prototype of the former countess in The Queen of Spades.

In The Third Map, director Gennady Shaposhnikov combined grand opera and lyrical-psychological drama, turning the story into a mystical thriller with double reflections. Composer Alexey Krasheninnikov arranged music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and the 18th-century French composers Count Saint-Germain and Andre Grétry, and also wrote his own music for some scenes of the play. All vocal pieces are performed live with orchestra accompaniment.
When: 29 and 30 September 18:30
Address: Wawelberg Hall (St. Petersburg, Nevsky Prospekt, 7-9)
