Anatomy of a fall, Depp/Heard trial: for Justine Triet the “perversion” of reality goes beyond fiction

If Justine Triet was troubled by the parallels between her film and the trial that saw Johnny Depp and Amber Heard torn to pieces, the director confided that when it came to misogynistic violence, reality was unimaginable and far surpassed fiction.

In Anatomy of a fallthe trial which analyzes a couple’s descent into hell is strangely reminiscent of the legal battle between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp.

If the two stories, one fictional, the other very real, have little resemblance, we cannot help but notice that the two cases have in common systemic misogyny, which contaminates the couple, justice and produces a deluge of violence against women. This disturbing connection was not lost on the film’s director, Justine Triet.

Amber Heard, victim of a” delusional misogyny

Exactly one year after the end of the Amber Heard/Johnny Depp trial, a trial film was crowned with the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Self Anatomy of a fall it comes from Justine Triet’s imagination and not from real events, the director confided troubled from the coexistence between the shooting of his film and the actual trial that was taking place at the same time.

In the columns ofAssignedJustine Triet revealed: “ It was very amazing to see this process unfold in real life while we were filming ». She confirmed that she had seen it parallel between the two cases:

“We were in the middle of filming the trial scenes for the movie. The trial of Amber Heard and Johnny Depp was broadcast live from the United States. In the evening, when I returned from filming, I watched it almost live. I actually saw some parallels there. »

Even though the story she imagined made viewers’ blood run cold, Justine Triet maintained that fiction could never reach the level of perversion of reality. Referring to the incredible violence suffered by Amber Heard, the director confided:

Reality is always much worse than fiction. In the process, Amber Heard is extremely mistreated. There is delusional misogyny in this process. This taught me one thing: the reality is much worse, at least in the United States. The reality is totally beyond imagination. I could never write something like that. I cannot create this perversion. »

Anatomy of a fall, which we highly recommend, is still in theaters. As for the feminist issues of the Depp/Heard trial, they are analyzed in Cécile Delarue’s excellent documentary, The factory of liesavailable in repeat on France TV.
