LGBT phobia in sports is far from gone, according to a study

On Wednesday 6 September, polling institute Ipsos, in collaboration with the LGBT+ Sports Federation, published the results of a lengthy survey on homophobia and transphobia in sport.

The survey institute, in collaboration with the LGBT+ Sports Federation, questioned the first interested parties, who denounce discrimination that is still very present against them. Therefore, according to 77% of LGBTQI+ people interviewed, the world of sport is still homophobic and transphobic.

75% of French people believe that the sporting environment is homophobic

Thus, sports circles are still considered LGBTphobic, because respectively 77% of French LGBTQI + and 75% of French people perceive them as homophobic.

According to 40% of the French, team sports are those where homophobia and/or transphobia are strongest. And not surprisingly, football rises to first place, immediately ahead of rugby. A quarter of people who play team sports, or 26%, believe that the words ” p*d*s ” AND ” sons of bitches shouted in stadiums are just popular expressions and not homophobic slurs.

Always on the insults, 40% of respondents have already witnessed or targeted a homophobic slur for example ” p*de ” OR ” bitch “. A number that goes up to 67% come from the LGBTQI+ community.

A small majority of LGBTQI+ athletes come out

Another alarming fact: after learning of the homosexuality or trans identity of a new member of their team, about one in two athletes report that some of their teammates would have a bad reaction, ranging from teasing to physical violence . If these reactions are unacceptable for 47% of those interviewed, 39% believe they are ” inadequate but understandable “, while for 14%” normal ».

A quarter reported having seen or been verbally abused about it within their sports team. The figure rises to 60% among LGBTQI+ people. An assault that became physical forR 44% of these.

Figures that have real consequences: following these attacks, 29% decided to hide their sexual orientation and 15% stopped playing sports. In line with these results, only 55% of LGBT+ respondents came out to their sports entourage.
