If September rhymes with back to school, it is also a key moment for fashion, among the magazines that publish their most decisive issue of the year (the famous september issue), and the Fashion Week spring-summer which is in full swing (the one in Paris will take place from 25 September to 3 October). Even Zara has decided to underline the news since the Spanish giant of fast fashion has just announced it in a press release distribute its second-hand platform in France from 7 September.
Zara Used: sell, buy, donate, repair
Already in service in the UK since November 2022, Zara Pre Owned allows individuals to sell and buy second hand items of the brand (fashion for women, men and children). It is not possible to make returns, as in most private resale sites. But unlike the competition, Zara will allow you to donate your clothes, with a home collection service that will go directly to the Le Relais association. This new platform will also allow Zara brand clothes to be repaired, via the site or in one of the 110 shops in France (which can also act as parcel reception points).

As Paula Ampuero Castellanos, responsible for sustainable development at Zara.com, explains in the press release, this platform is part of the strategic sustainability plan of the Spanish group Inditex (which also owns Bershka, Massimo Dutti and Pull & Bear). The Iberian giant has set itself the goal of reducing its emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.
The fact that such a powerful and influential group offers its own platform clearly demonstrates the importance of the second-hand market and the willingness of the sector’s historic players to position themselves there for fear of being totally excluded. Except that since Vinted, Depop, Vestiaire Collective and co are anchored in French customs, we are witnessing a rapid fashionization of the second hand. That is to say that some platforms push towards unbridled consumption using techniques worthy of fast fashion, as analyzed in the “Second hand” episode of the podcast Raw material, with Doctor of Management Sciences Élodie Juge. And it will certainly not be new players like Zara who will improve this acceleration in the consumption of second-hand goods, much to the chagrin of the planet.
