It is thanks to a simple T-shirt that the director of “La La Land” and president of the jury of the Venice Film Festival Damien Chazelle has shown clear and clear support for the strike.

Inaugurated this Wednesday, August 30, the Venice Film Festival is the first festival to bear the brunt of the writers’ and actors’ strike, which has been affecting Hollywood for several months now, and the SAG-AFTRA union, forbidding its members to shoot, but also to participate in the promotion of films.

And for good reason, many stars are missing from this festival, renowned for bringing together the biggest names in cinema every year. But this does not mean that the movement does not exist there, on the contrary.

Damien Chazelle supports the strike

President of the jury this year, the director Damien Chazelle – including movies The The Earth AND first man inaugurated in 2016 and 2018 – he has not failed to show clear support for these colleagues. Starting from the red carpet of the festival’s opening press conference, during which the 38-year-old director wore a t-shirt and carried a badge that read ” Writers Guild on strike ”, to be translated as “the screenwriters on strike”. Simple and clear.

Later, he told several reporters: “Any work of art has value in itself and is not limited to contenting itself – a very fashionable word in Hollywood at the moment – ​​with feeding a pipe”before insisting: “Art comes before content”thus referring to the grip of streaming platforms on certain overproductions.

Many actors absent

This 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival will welcome Zendaya, who will inaugurate the Italian festival Challengers From Luca Guadagninobut the American social movement decided otherwise.

The film was replaced at the opening by an Italian production, Commander, which tells about an unknown episode from the beginning of the Second World War.
