An investigation opened after allegations of sexual assault against a former prefect

Alain Thirion, former head of civil security, is the subject of a preliminary investigation for having entered the room of one of his collaborators naked to rape her sexually.

On Wednesday 23 August, the Paris prosecutor’s office announced that Alain Thirion, 61, is the subject of a preliminary investigation, opened following a “a sexual assault complaint”.

The facts would have occurred at the end of June, in Aix-en-Provence, where the former director of Civil Security should have attended the new promotion ceremony which would have taken place at the Fire Brigade School. During his stay, Alain Thirion would presented naked in the middle of the night in the room of one of his collaborators, and allegedly sexually assaulted her. Word of the case spread immediately, and Alain Thirion was suspended and then fired, and the Inspectorate General of the administration seized.

The investigation was entrusted to the Brigade for the Suppression of Delinquency against the Person (BRDP), specified the public prosecutor.

Already a complaint for moral and sexual harassment filed in 2019

It is not the first time that Alain Thirion has come implicated for his behavior with women. In 2019, while he was prefect of Haute-Corse, the sub-prefect of Calvi Anne Ballereau had filed a complaint against him for moral harassment and sexual harassment for events that occurred between 2015 and 2016. A judicial investigation was then opened, and he had eventually been subject to a layoff in mid-July. However, Anne Ballereau appealed against this decision.

Quoted from franceinfo as part of the opening of the recent preliminary investigation, Alain Thirion’s lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, disputes any sexual assault. “It is an unfortunate incident of which only the prefect Thirion could, if need be, feel himself a victimhe told Franceinfo. In any case, I am truly amazed, on the one hand, by the media coverage of these facts, which have no criminal qualification, and, on the other, by the absence of minimum checks which would have made it possible to avoid clogging up our justice already sufficiently asphyxiated. »
