The cost of returning to university will exceed 3000 euros in September 2023

In a report, the Federation of General Students’ Associations (Fage) deplores an approximately 4.7% increase in costs for students, partly due to inflation.

The cost of living of students continues to rise, without any solution being granted to them. According to the Federation of General Student Associations (FAGE), the cost of starting the academic year in September will reach on average €3,024.49 per student, revealed their barometer published this Wednesday, August 16, broadcast by franceinfo.

An increase of 4.7% compared to last year, since the beginning of the school year it has cost students an average of 2,889 euros. There are disparities between geographic areas: Fage estimates that across regions the cost of going back to college will be €2,972 and which will be in Île-de-France from €3,596.

An “insurmountable” step for most students

La Fage calculated this amount taking into account the costs of daily living, those specific to the beginning of the school year, as well as others, more variable depending on the region, such as the cost of rent or transport.

Therefore, this increase in the cost of the beginning of the academic year is partly driven by inflation, which has caused an 8.8% increase in living expenses, i.e. rent, which represents 45% of student expenses. students, and food. These will settle in September 2023 at 1,199.67 euros. For example, the average rent amount will be €533.83 at the start of the school year, which is 8.95% more than in 2022.

For most students, the start of the new academic year is a milestone that will prove insurmountable without the financial support of the family or a job alongside their studies “, alarmed the Fage in his report. According to the organization, the aid dedicated to students is insufficient and ” do not allow them to cope with the increase in costs “, he denounces.

The increase in APLs, up to 1.6%, is far from offsetting the drastic increase in rents. As well as the increase in scholarships on social criteria, revalued at an extra 37 euros per month: ” This is well below the overall increase in the cost of daily living, which accumulates an increase of €97.81 compared to the start of the 2022 school year. “, stressed the Fage.
