Giorgio Armani’s Iconic Movie Costumes: From The Dark Knight to The Wolf of Wall Street

Giorgio Armani is one of those designers who is often called a trendsetter. It did not turn the fashion industry upside down, but in the 80s clean air managed to create the business style that was a status sign in the 90s and is rightfully considered a timeless classic today. A perfectly fitting loose-fitting suit became, and remains, the hallmark of the Armani fashion house for the next 40 years.

Armani’s talent lies in his ability to create complete images with details worked out to the smallest detail, and therefore he was quickly noticed in Hollywood and was often invited to shoot as a costume designer. Giorgio has created visuals for more than 200 paintings throughout his career. He was the author of Richard Gere’s light gray suit in the movie American Gigolo and the iconic image of Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street.

On the 89th birthday of the maestro, we recall the best Giorgio Armani costumes in cinema.

“American Gigolo”

American Gigalo is Armani’s debut film. With the help of Giorgio and the charisma of Richard Gere, the suit became the sexiest item in the men’s wardrobe, and Julian Kay became a style icon.

“The Untouchables”

Remember the famous footage of FBI special agents from the movie “The Untouchables”? Therefore, the producers suggested that Armani create outfits for the main characters to perfectly reflect the atmosphere of Chicago in the 20s. Meanwhile, Giorgio designed several three-piece suits for the Kevin Costner character and the same gray suit from the last fight on the courthouse roof.

“Shaft”

Remembering the cult images of Armani’s authorship, it is impossible not to mention perhaps one of the most well-known screenshots. Yes, we are talking about Detective Shaft, whose wardrobe consists of a black leather jacket, a turtleneck sweater and chunky lace-up boots.

“Black Knight”

Yes, Batman is definitely good in action, but have you ever noticed Bruce Wayne’s costumes in real life? Giorgio worked on them not alone, but with Lindy Hemming (one of Hollywood’s most famous costume designers).

“Bastard Gang”

What could be better than Brad Pitt? Just Brad Pitt in a perfect white tuxedo. Costume designer Anna Biedzicka-Sheppard invited Giorgio Armani to create the look. The result speaks for itself.

“Game without rules”

Women’s costumes performed by Giorgio Armani can be seen in the movie “A Game Without Rules”. This time the designer worked with Cindy Evans on the image of actress Naomi Watts. They say that after seeing a photo of the actress testifying before Congress, Armani immediately wanted to be involved in the project by dressing Watts in a branded suit.

“Social network”

In The Social Network, the protagonist has a special relationship with Armani. The thing is, in real life, Facebook co-founder Sean Parker only wore clothes from the fashion house’s collection. According to costume designer Jacqueline West, Parker’s basic wardrobe consisted of baggy jackets, basic T-shirts and tailored jeans produced by the brand.

“Money Hunter”

The film takes place in the early 90s, when Armani men’s suits were a symbol of luxury and power. That’s why costume designer Sandy Powell turned to the archives of this particular fashion house. Meanwhile, Giorgio has created two costumes specifically for the hero DiCaprio.
