Wallet ? Check! Telephone ? Check! Passport ? Check! But wait, didn’t you forget something in your hand luggage? According to a dermatologist, one small, big-ticket item is missing from your list when you fly.

We don’t necessarily suspect it, but in airplane the skin is put to the test. The air in the cabin is very dry due to the air conditioning, which tends to dehydrate the skin. But that’s not the only thing that can harm our skin. UVA and UVB rays at high altitudes are also much more powerful than on land. A study published in 2015 by the journal named Jawa Dermatology it also showed that pilots flying for an hour at an altitude of 30,000 meters would receive the same amount of radiation as a person who was exposed to the sun for 20 minutes.

This is why Dr. Lindsey, a dermatologist who provides valuable advice through the social network TikTok, highlighted the importance of carrying in your hand luggage not a pair of sunglasses but a tube of SPF50 sunscreen. An especially important tip if you like to sit on the window side.

Although some aircraft are equipped with a UV filter, this is not always the case! Of course, there is always the option to close the porthole so as not to be susceptible to radiation, but if you want to enjoy your eyesight, using an SPF is highly recommended.

How often should you apply sunscreen when flying?

Applying sunscreen takes place exactly like when you go to the beach, pool or mountains. It is therefore necessary to apply it 30 minutes before the flight and renew the application every two hours. In this way the skin is adequately protected and the sun capital is preserved.
