Why you can no longer smell your own perfume may surprise you

If you’ve been wearing the same perfume for a few months or even a few years, you’ve probably noticed that its smell seems to have faded and that you’re having a hard time perceiving it now. But what is the reason?

Whether you wear a very intoxicating perfume or, on the contrary, a rather light one, after a few months of use, one gets the impression, that its smell is no longer present as before. Has your skin adjusted? Is the perfume you use veiled? or is this impression due to a completely different factor? To answer this question, it is important to understand how the human body works.

We have olfactory receptors. These allow us to prevent danger through the reception and analysis of odors (good or bad). When we wear a perfume, these receptors are stimulated and become saturated very quickly. If our brain hasn’t completely finished analyzing this smell in a few days, it will inhibit it very quickly in order to be able to detect other odors that may pose a danger. Result? We no longer smell our perfume. It’s a bit of a shame when the price of some juices can be around several hundred euros.

A question of the environment

The olfactory and hormonal environment would also play an important role in how we smell ourselves. Alienor Massenet, Symrise perfumer explains it to us Madame Figaro : “ Humidity, outside temperature, mood, or even hormones can make your perfume smell more or less good. “. This is why noses prefer to wait until Monday morning to validate last week’s productions.

What can we do to feel our perfume again?

Unfortunately for us, doubling the dose of perfume that we apply to the skin on a daily basis will not be enough to solve the problem by bypassing the natural mechanisms of our body. But there is a solution to smell our favorite perfume again. It’s just a matter of taking a little break, for a few days or a few weeks, trying not to wear it. For perfumers, this method can be a bit drastic, but it is very effective in disaccustoming our receptors to the smell of our favorite fragrance.

And if you are addicted to perfume, what to do? We simply opt for another fragrance, which could be a winter or summer alternative to the one we are used to wearing. In this way we can alternate the scents and thus divert the attention of our brain. Although, as explained by Isabelle Ferrand, olfactory expert of the Maison Cinquième Sens interviewed by Madame Figaro : “When you no longer smell it (perfume), it means that it is an integral part of you, that it is in complete harmony with you. It’s your perfume “.
