Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed his country’s victory in the Eurovision Song Contest with joy.
The hugely popular Kalush Orchestra won the competition on Saturday with a record 439 votes from across Europe, after winning an exciting evening in Turin, Italy.
Zelensky then said: “Our courage impresses the world, our music conquers Europe!”
The winner of each year’s competition traditionally becomes the host of the following year’s event, and Zelensky has promised that Ukraine will be no exception, despite its current state after the Russian invasion.
“We will do our best to receive Eurovision attendees and guests one day in Mariupol, Ukraine. Free, Quiet, Restored! “I’m sure our winning rope in the battle against the enemy is not far off.”
After more than a decade of competition disasters, with book rotations, the UK also did very well, with Sam Ryder finishing second. The UK candidate led the competition after the jury vote, but the popular vote was decisive in moving up to the top spot in the Ukrainian Council.
